Why won't my Windows Live/MSN Video chat work while the TELUS security services Firewall is running?
This is due to the way the Windows Live/MSN Video Chat and the webcam establish a connection. A connection is established by randomly selecting available ports from within a large range. To ensure a successful connection, the entire range of ports must always be open. You can view the details on Microsoft's Support site here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927847.
It is strongly discouraged to create exceptions in the Firewall for all the port ranges listed in the above article. An exception instructs the firewall to leave a port open and accept any and all incoming and outgoing traffic on a permanent basis. As this virtually the same as permanently disabling the Firewall, it seriously compromises the security of your computer.
It is recommended to disable the Firewall to establish a connection, and then enable the Firewall once the connection is confirmed.
To do so:
1. Open the TELUS security services Main Menu.
2. Click on Firewall.
3. Remove the checkmark in Enable Firewall.
4. Create your video Chat connection. Confirm that you and the party you are attempting to reach can both hear and see each other.
5. Open the TELUS security services Main Menu.
6. Click on Firewall.
7. Place a checkmark in Enable Firewall.
Once the connection is established, the firewall can be enabled and it will no longer block the application during this session. The process must be repeated if you wish to create a new connection.
